A Year in the South Chilterns

Cobstone Mill, Turville

Article text
Cobstone Mill overlooks the little village of Turville and is a well known feature in the South Chilterns because it was used in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. On this particular day the sky and clouds made an impressive backdrop, so I decided to take a photograph. The windmill is certainly not off the beaten track but it takes a few visits to work out the best places to view it. Unfortunately for the visitors in the photo, the closer you get the less you can see and when you get to the top of the very steep hill you discover that the windmill is on private ground, is behind a fence and can't be seen. This photo was taken from the village, at the start of the footpath that leads up to the windmill. You can however also get good views of it from the other side of the Turville valley
